History of VPNs

The VPN, or virtual private network, dates back to 1996 when Microsoft employee, Singh-Pall, created a method and tool to allow users a way to work securely through a privatized network from the comfort of their own home. Though VPNs were initially created for employees to access business networks, as more and more security breaches occurred, personal VPNs became popularized. This became the stepping stone for all future VPNs to come. Currently, an estimated 16 million people in the United States, alone, use a VPN service, with the number increasing as technology advances. The two most common VPN services are personal VPNs and business VPNs that all cater to different audiences and needs.

Where are VPNs today? Though, as seen in the graph, VPN users have tremendously increased year to year, this increase in users is not enough. An estimated 16% of adults have protective services in the United States, leaving the remaining unsecured and vulnerable to breach. Just recently, Ran Locar and Noam Rotem of VPNMentor, two security experts, discovered an unprotected database containing detailed information of 80 million individuals. Not intending to come about something this large, this just goes to show how easily it is to become endangered. It is best to understand the risks, know what resources are open, and utilize them.
